The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater (in Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium) or simply Amphitheatrum (in Italian: Amphitheater), located in the center of the city of Rome, is the largest Roman amphitheater in the world (capable of holding a number of spectators estimated between 50,000 and 87,000). It is the most important Roman amphitheater, as well as the most imposing monument of ancient Rome that has come down to us.
Inserted in 1980 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites - together with the entire historic center of Rome, the extraterritorial areas of the Holy See in Italy and the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le mura - in 2007, the only European monument, it was also included among the New Seven Wonders of the World following a competition organized by New Open World Corporation (NOWC).
